The standard your pool is checked against

QBCC-licensed inspectors assess against the Queensland pool safety standard (Queensland Development Code MP 3.4, built on AS 1926.1). One standard applies to all pools regardless of age - Queensland removed era-based exemptions years ago, so an older fence that "was compliant when built" can still fail today.

What the inspector checks

  • Fence at least 1200mm at every point, measured outside the barrier
  • No gaps over 100mm - under, through or beside the barrier
  • Gate opens away from the pool, self-closes and self-latches from any position; latch release at 1500mm or shielded
  • 900mm non-climbable zone clear - pot plants, BBQs and branches included
  • Boundary fences in the barrier: 1800mm with no climbable rails on the pool side
  • Windows and doors giving access restricted where the building is part of the barrier
  • Compliant CPR sign - Queensland prescribes the sign content

Queensland's most common fails

Subtropical growth is the local villain: hedges and palms turning climb zones climbable between inspections, and coastal corrosion killing gate hinges and latches. Walk the barrier with the DIY checklist a week out.

Pass or fail

Pass: certificate issued (often on the spot) and lodged with the QBCC register. Fail: a Form 26 nonconformity notice lists the items; fix and re-inspect - most inspectors include one re-check. Details in failed inspection.
