Pool fence rules, made simple
Every state builds its pool barrier rules on the same Australian Standard — AS 1926.1 — then adds its own twists. These guides cover the rules that actually fail inspections: heights, gaps, gates, glass, boundary fences and signage, and what it costs to fix them.

Fence rule FAQs
What's the standard pool fence height in Australia?
At least 1200mm from finished ground level, measured on the outside of the barrier, everywhere around the pool. Gaps under or in the fence can’t exceed 100mm. Full details in the height and gaps guide.
Do the rules apply to spas and inflatable pools?
Generally yes — anything that can hold about 300mm of water needs a compliant barrier in most states, including spas and inflatable pools. Lockable lids are an option for some spas. See spa rules.
Can my garden wall or house form part of the pool barrier?
Often, yes — boundary fences and building walls can form part of the barrier, but higher standards usually apply (like 1800mm height for boundary fences). See the boundary fence guide.
Who enforces pool fence rules?
Councils enforce barrier rules in every state, and state regulators license the inspectors who issue certificates. Fines apply for non-compliant barriers even when you’re not selling or leasing.
