How the NT applies the standard
The Territory runs a modified Australian standard - AS 1926.1-based with NT adjustments (chain mesh provisions, height measurement tweaks) - for pools installed since 1 January 2003 and older pools certified to it. Some pre-2003 pools instead meet a community safety standard: a barrier that stops an unsupervised under-five reaching the pool.
NT specifics worth knowing
- The government's Pool Fencing Unit inspects and issues compliance certificates - including free advice inspections
- Post-2003 pools must hold a compliance certificate; older pools get pulled in at sale, transfer or lease
- A non-standard safety provision exists where site constraints make standard compliance impractical
- Wet-season growth and corrosion are the practical enemies of Darwin barriers
The rules in detail
The rule guides cover the underlying standard the NT modifies: heights and gaps, gates and latches, glass fencing, boundary fences, CPR signs and spa rules. Territory overview: NT pool rules.
